While enjoying my “porch time” this morning, I was listening to this song. It has been a favorite of mine for around 15 years for many different reasons, including the lyrics.
Lord you’re holy,
Lord you’re holy and we lift you up and magnify your name
Lord you’re holy,
Lord you’re holy and we lift you up and magnify your name
I look around and I see, all the works your hands have made,
the awesomeness of you, and how your love will never fade,
mere words cannot express what I feel inside,
I can’t describe your glory divine, but as a token of my love, this is what I’ll do,
I lift my hands and cry, Lord
Lord you’re holy,
Lord you’re holy and we lift you up and magnify your name
Lord you’re holy,
Lord you’re holy and we lift you up and magnify your name
There’s not enough words that I can say, to tell you how much,
I appreciate, all the wonderful things, you’ve given me, your love and kindness, your tender mercies,
It’s my desire, to praise you
I want to praise you Lord
And to tell you how much, I love you
Cause you’re worthy of all, all the glory
You’re worthy of all, the praise
And you’re worthy of all the praise, I don’t know why you would love me, why you would show me, so much mercy, why you would suffer, and die for me, way back, way back, on Calvary, but I
But I, I thank you
I thank you, somebody help me thank him
I thank you
Jesus, I thank you Lord
I thank you
My heart cries thank you, and I give you all…. the praise……

Today, however, the word “holy” kept striking me. What exactly does “holy” mean? We throw around that word quite a bit in the Christian world, but how many times do we truly sit and think about what it means? I took some time this morning to look at the meanings of the word. Here are some things I learned.
- In the Old Testament alone, the word “holy” is mentioned 431 times and this doesn’t include the use of the word “holiness.”
- “Qodesh” is the Hebrew word of holy and it means “separateness, apartness, or sacredness”. It reinforces the idea that God is set apart from His creation.
- “Hagios” is the Greek word for holy and it is defined as ““pure, morally blameless” or “set apart” as in set apart for holy use, which is what the saints of God have been called to.”

Holy is not a word that can truly be explained. We cannot be holy as these flesh and blood creatures. Instead, we can only strive to be holier through Jesus and the Holy Spirit, but will never reach the “Holy” of Jesus. He leads us to live holy lives set apart from things of this world. Tozer puts it best in my opinion.
And by the way, did you see that list of qualities in the song? Those can get you going on their own!
